Is your teenager to die "Huff?"
One day you enter the room of his son and to his surprise, found that lack tin whipped cream on her bed. You think to yourself: "That's odd."
Outside the bag of his daughter falls can of paint thinner you used three years ago when they remodeled the kitchen and has since been sitting in the garage of the discarded tools and other supplies. Then think, "Is in art class this semester? "
If something like this has happened to you, your child may well be abusing inhalants. If it is, he is in danger not only the destruction of his mind and body, but could also die.
What are inhalants?
Inhalants children is discharged are mainly at home. For example, if you have liquids, glues, paints, solvents, air bottles (you know, those cans of air used to clean your computer keyboard), correction fluids, deodorants, deodorant spray, cooking spray, or cans of whipped cream, then you have inhalants at home ... and I bet you do.
All these types of products are very common in any household. After all, we all use these products to help in cooking, cleaning, school projects, home repair, etc. The problem is that these are the same products your child may be using drugs. In many surveys I have seen, about four in ten middle-school age kids have tried huffing (one of many slang terms for the inhaling toxic fumes to get high).
Inhalants offer a quick, cheap and high intensity for about five to forty-five minutes. They are easy to get a hold of, conceal and explain if detected.
So what? At least my child is not doing drugs.
If that is what you think, you could be totally wrong. Inhalants can often be much worse than the most commonly used illicit drugs. These products were never manufactured to be ingested. In fact all these products carry warnings on their labels about the adverse effects that may occur by inhalation, ingestion and sometimes even touching.
The fact is often overlooked inhalants are not drugs ... which are poisons, plain and simple. Unfortunately, many teens do not see them as poisons or even as drugs. They do not understand the serious and irreparable damage that can cause not only their brains, but their central nervous system. And do not forget character serious and permanent damage to their bones and internal organs. Chronic use can change the personality of your child forever and cause mental retardation. Basically, these gases destroy cells that will never recover in the brain, bone, muscle tissue and internal organs.
I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but U.S. only about 125 children die each year from snorting. Approximately 40% of these children died the first time they tried. Death can come from suffocation, drowning in their own vomit or heart attack ... not fun.
Wow, This is pretty scary. I never look out White in the same way again. How can I tell if my child is gasping?
Now, before all that empty cabinets cleaning supplies, keep an eye out for foreign elements in possession of their children. Common inhalant paraphernalia include:
• the household products disappear too quickly used or hidden in coves
• These are some elements that are commonly used to inhale the product:
or plastic or paper bags
or rags or handkerchiefs
bottles or cans of soda or
or toilet paper tubes filled with tissues
Balloons O (nitrous oxide)
greyhound bullets or whipped cream (nitrous oxide)
Here are some symptoms to be aware if your child is gasping:
• chemical odors on breath or clothing
• Paint or other stains on face, hands or clothing
• facial rash, blisters or sores around the nose, mouth, throat or lips
• freezing around the nose or mouth (nitrous oxide)
• a painful tongue
• eye irritation or glass, expansion pupils pupils
• frequent unexplained cough or bleeding nose
• weight loss
• headaches
This Article is not intended to cause an anxiety attack. Perhaps you suspect, but just not sure. After all, maybe your son decided to surprise cleaning house ... which explains all the wood was polished. It is unlikely, I know, but a parent can dream.
If my child is gasping, what should I do?
If you catch your child in the act, stay calm. If you rile her up with a lot of screaming and panic, it is possible that in his vulnerable state, could take to cardiac arrest. You do not want that and neither does she. look out quietly outdoors and follow the signs warning about the product. As soon as possible, get that an emergency room or doctor to make sure she is out of immediate danger.
You and your child may need family therapy to combat this problem. Do not assume that this is a stage and goes. Inhalants can be as addictive as drugs.
There is some debate about whether teens should be educated about inhalants as could take the kids to try them. Well, as most of you who know me probably guess, I'm on the side of education and outreach. Your child needs know the truth about these dangers, because inevitably be faced with the option or not Huff Huff. If you have accurate information (from a source reliable than your friend who just put his head in a plastic bag full of paint fumes), his son usually make smarter decisions. The belief that "If not mention it, do not know what they're missing, "only lead to misinformation, a barrier in communication and ultimately, a teenager encounter a situation that is not prepared to handle.
Remember that adolescence is a temporary mental disorder and will pass within a few years.
