The Origin and History of Italian Greyhounds
Italian Greyhounds are the smallest dogs in the family of view, also known as gazehounds. The Italian Greyhound is an ancient breed. An Egyptian tomb 6000 years old shows like the dogs Italian Greyhound. Also represented in the decorative arts of Mediterranean ago 2000 years in the areas of modern Greece and Turkey. Small greyhound skeletons have been found in archaeological excavations in these areas.
These small dogs dogs became popular among the nobility during the Renaissance. A small greyhound-type dog was found in a lava flow of the ancient city of Pompeii, which is ruined and partially buried Roman city of the city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy. What we know today as the Dog Italian Greyhound was distributed widely throughout southern Europe. Because it was so popular throughout the Italian peninsula became known as the "Italian Greyhound".
James I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, Anne of Denmark and Queen Victoria owned all Italian greyhounds. During the 1700s, Frederick the Great of Prussia took one of these little dogs to war with him, and buried himself when the dog died in the Sands Souci Palace. It was the deathbed wish of Frederick, to be buried with his dog, so on the 205th anniversary of his death on 17 August 1991, the family of Frederick moved his remains to Sans Souci, and placed beside his Italian Greyhound little.
In the 19th century African boss liked dogs so much that he offered 200 cattle in exchange for a single Italian Greyhound. The Italian Greyhound was officially recognized by the AKC in 1886. The records show that few shows were introduced in the late 19 and early 20th century.
After the First World War Italian Greyhounds were in danger of extinction in Britain until the fresh stock was imported from the United States. The Italian Greyhound Club of America was founded in 1954. The first time the Italian Greyhound was named "Best in Show in 1963.
There is a difference of opinion as to whether Italian greyhounds were bred for hunting lower or were intended to be, basically, pets and companions. They have filled the two roles that makes them easily adaptable to the city or living the countries. In his loving side city, The Italian Greyhound is happy relaxing at home or huddled in a blanket or lap of its owner. However, his country enjoys loving side exercise and outdoor activities when not too hot or too cold.
