Do you sometimes find the accumulation of items that you just said could one day be useful? Well, if that day does not materialize in time is likely to discard things that serve no practical purpose. Curiously, however, many delight in collecting things that can never be useful in a practice. These are the people who have made a hobby of collecting.

A few fans along the traditional lines of work, collecting objects such as rocks, stamps or old coins. Others have a passion for collecting dolls, stuffed animals, spoons, medals, postcards, antiques, musical recordings, or vacation memories. The possibilities are endless! A U.S. attorney, for example, has a collection of about 200,000 railroad spikes! He is one of hundreds of fans who travel the countryside in search of old railroad spikes that have a date stamped on the head.

It's amazing the things people collect and false teeth, skulls and cookie jars, trolley car tickets, hair and fans and kites and claws, the dogs and coins, canes, canaries and shoes ... and bone buttons, pins and forged signatures and first editions and gas masks.

Then there are the collectors who have a taste for the bizarre. Take the case of a Russian countess who collected bedpans that had belonged to the rich and famous. A Japanese regent had a collection 5,000 dogs in kennels housing luxuriously. According to Harper's, a wealthy collector gathered thousands of fleas preserved in spirits of the individual vials, marked with the place of origin and the host name, animal or human, where the flea has been found.

Extreme cases, however, the idea of collecting things is not like modern times. Amass large collections of books and manuscripts, for example, is a very ancient activity. The light since ancient book tells how the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal (seventh century BC) sent his scribes across to collect copies of the first records and documents for his royal library in Nineveh. Palace Ashurbanipal containing this amazing collection was discovered in 1853.

Greek and Roman aristocrats were well known for collection art. The book containing "A rebellious passion states: At the time of Cicero and Caesar, victorious Rome personified extravagance and conspicuous consumption. ... Art dealers occupy whole blocks. Some of the richest citizens, even had their own private museums.

What is the fascination of collecting?
