contemporary art at UM has not survived 10,000 years! all I have been around for about 60 years (well, contemporary art began with the WW2) anyhoo, back to the main question: personally, i never understand contemporary art (I mean shit, how can it be art for the gods right?) I think it's a waste of time (ok I admit some of them are pretty good, not all), but you know how rich people can afford afford to throw money, and the art was made for them so they could go to extra special galleries with other idiots with a lot of money and buy thousands of pounds just because can! What happened to the normal age of great classical art that is truly pleasing to the eye ??!!! to answer your question, is important because, lets face we can survive without the contemporary art, but will survive.
